  5. The elegant E flat major 19th (Affetuoso) at times sounds like a parody of Chopin, but appears to employ a variation on the theme Scriabin used in the D sharp minor Etude No. 12, from Op. 8 (). The robust muscularity of the C minor 20th (Appassionato) is contrasted most effectively by the mesmeric quiet and gentleness of No. 21, in B flat.
  6. Complete Preludes for Piano is a Hyperion Records recording from starring pianist Piers Lane. Mr Lane plays with intense passion and I feel that he truly understands the music /5(5).
  7. I've never been really impressed with Ruth Laredo's playing despite owning several of her recordings. This Rachmaninoff set fits that bill. It has all the Preludes but the playing is uninspired (and she even plays a blatantly wrong note in the haunting penultimate Prelude in the Op. 32 set)/5(6).
